Introduction to Future Spaces

Future Spaces is a concept created by Layrd Design, a team of commercial interior designers. The events are to showcase the future of interior spaces filled with talks from inspiring speakers, interactive workshops and networking opportunities. Learn how to create amazing spaces using innovative approaches and materials.

As a young design company, we are very focused on sustainability and the planet, as well as well-being. The concept is to educate individuals about the changes they can make, which can have a significant impact on sustainability, while demonstrating how supporting well-being can create a better culture that ultimately results in profits for the organisation.

Future Spaces 2022

On 21st July 2022 in Norwich, Layrd Design hosted the first Future Spaces event. The innovative event was designed to show attendees how creative design, approaches and materials can build a more sustainable workplace - as well as a happier one. At the Norwich City Football Club, we welcomed over 40 business owners, designers and sustainably minded employees and showcased innovative ideas, held thought-provoking talks and discussions and made a mark with this event.

We displayed examples of innovative future spaces designed by our team and furnished by our long-standing partners at Orangebox, Tarkett and The Good Plant Company. We also hosted a moss-making workshop in the afternoon which got attendees networking and taking home a new skill.

Speakers included; Will Mayes from Layrd Design, Ruscha Fields from The Good Plant Company, Michael Aastrup from Tarkett and Nathan Hurley from Orangebox.

Attendees turned up with absolutely no knowledge about what a future space could look like and went away with inspiration and ideas that could help them build a happier and better workplace.

The event was hugely successful and recognised across the sector, building a strong following for future events held.

Future Spaces 2023

After the success of our first event at Norwich Football Club in 2022, we decided to bring this to Cambridge to a wider audience.

In June 2023, we filled the West Hub in Cambridge with Orangebox furniture and enjoyed the afternoon of networking, thought-provoking talks around sustainability within the industry, an interactive workshop and plant-based food and drink. The topics of well-being and the future of interior design brought many individuals together for the day.

Speakers included; Will Mayes from Layrd Design, Michael Aastrup from Tarkett, Eleanor Penny-Inskip from Layrd Design and Luke Palmer from Orangebox.

Will opened the day by introducing the concept of Future Spaces and who Layrd Design are. Michael Aastrup gave us an insight into Tarkett flooring and a deep dive into sustainable choices within the industry. Luke Palmer closed the event with their honest talk on the circular economy and this being a shared responsibility.

In the afternoon, we hosted an interactive workshop - Collaborate & Create - to invite attendees to explore what the future of the workplace will be using laser cut boards and furniture based on an office floor plan. Each team created a space based on the set brief whilst networking within the set teams.

What is the future workplace?

The ways in which we all work have changed significantly in the last few years, and ideas surrounding what the workplace is are being challenged and reconsidered every day. As a result, companies need to be able to meet the new expectations of employees for a workplace that balances both office & remote working, with the office as a hub for socialisation, collaboration and organic interactions.

With the increase in life science & tech innovation hubs, companies must work hard to attract & retain the best new talent. This makes it vital for workplaces to develop a clear company culture, brand image, and values that ultimately create environments that employees want to be in and feel inspired by.

Following the workshop, Layrd's workplace lead interior designer Eleanor Penny presented and explained her view on the floor plan. We saw an office design through a designer's eye and learnt the reasons behind the scheme.

Our great sponsors for 2023 included Tarkett, Opek and Liquidline.
