Sophie is the EMEA Head of Applied Research for Cushman & Wakefield (“C&W”), running C&W’s Living Lab, researching the impact of work and workplace on health, wellbeing and performance. Sophie has over 18 years of experience advising some of the world’s largest organisations on how commercial architecture, workplace design and the built environment influences human health and performance, including how design can be used as a tool to create economic, environmental and social vitality.

In addition, Sophie is a PhD student and Academic Researcher at the Technical University of Eindhoven, researching the impact of architectural design on stress and cognition. She explores how sensory experiences affect physiological stress, cognition, and well-being. Her work spans architecture, interior design, biophilia, cognitive neuroscience, and stress physiology. Sophie has authored several papers on the design attributes within our physical home and workplace environments that may influence physiological stress, including the impact of biophilic design on concentration. Sophie is currently working on a research project to understand how the design of chairs, desks and workstations influence neurophysiological stress and impact our ability to think and perform. This research specifically evaluates how design-mediated lack of movement (sedentary behaviour), poor posture and muscle tension may exasperate and promote chronic stress within the workplace. Sophie holds an MSc in Neuroscience from King’s College London, a BSc (Hon) in Urbanism and completed her MBA at London Business School in 2016.

Sophie opened Future Spaces with her talk 'The Spaces that Shape Us: How our environments effect our brains, bodies, and behaviors.'

Jim Taylour

Jim Taylour, is Head of Design and Wellbeing at Orangebox, the design-led office furniture manufacturer based in South Wales, UK

Jim trained as a furniture designer and is a Chartered Ergonomist and has worked in the office furniture industry for 30 years both in a specialised occupational health capacity and in mainstream workplace design and research.  Jim has published a number of papers on the relationship between physical and psychological workplace well-being and appropriately deployed workspaces and technology.  Jim also chairs the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors special interest group on children’s ergonomics and helps to represent the industry in harmonisation of furniture standards across Europe through the British Standards Institute.

Research and innovation around the topics of nomadic and collaborative working have helped to fuel rapid growth for Orangebox in recent years both in the UK and abroad. With work being increasingly defined as what we do rather than where we do it,  Orangebox R and D continue to explore ways in which innovative design can connect people in a more productive and healthy way for happier outcomes in any setting.

Jim's engaging presentation at Future Spaces was based on inclusivity within design and the gap between education spaces and the workplace.

Shaz Hawkins

Shaz Hawkins, Segment Marketing Manager for Healthcare, Ages Care & Education - Tarkett

Shaz Hawkins.png

Shaz has been working in the built environment industry since 2010 and has experience in several projects that require a neurodiverse approach.

Tarkett has collaborated with VR-EP to develop the world's first filter that allows users to experience what it's like to live with dementia. This innovative filter brings the built environment to life, allowing for better and more inclusive design. Shaz is currently working on expanding the virtual reality platform to accommodate additional neurotypes, such as autism and hyper- and hypo-sensitive individuals.

Tarkett has recently introduced its Principles for Human Conscious Design guide, which aims to challenge common misunderstandings about inclusive design and inspire designing with specific needs in mind. Communities, organizations, and businesses are increasingly acknowledging that everyone in society needs to be able to flourish to truly thrive. Design plays a pivotal role in creating spaces that foster inclusivity. Tarkett's approach to this is called Human-Conscious Design®, which reflects their commitment to creating flooring that benefits people and the planet.

Shaz will closed the day at Future Spaces on her talk 'Human Conscious Design Principles.'
